Relief for Sciatica, Hip, and Low Back Pain with Cox Technic Chiropractic

Most people’s first experience with chiropractic care, if at a young age, usually involves the traditional adjustment: crack, snap, and pop. Sometimes a handheld tool is used instead, giving the click, click, click sound. These methods are effective, and I use them regularly here at the Studio. But what if your lower back doesn’t respond like it used to? As you get older, those big pops may not happen anymore. The pain can spread into the hip or travel down the leg, sometimes reaching the thigh, calf, or even the foot. When that happens, another technique can make all the difference. Instead of relying on traditional manual adjustments or general traction, there is a gentler, more targeted method that addresses these deeper issues.

Experts estimate that up to 80% of the population will experience back pain at some time in their lives.

Created in the early 1970s, Dr. James Cox blended osteopathic and chiropractic principles, and found a way to alleviate back pain using a gentle form of spinal manipulation (flexion-distraction) called Cox Technic. This technique can be used for:

  • Lumbar disc herniations

  • Spondylolisthesis

  • Facet syndrome

  • Scoliosis

  • Lumbar disc bulges

  • Radiating leg pain (sciatica)

  • Degenerative disc disease

  • Spinal stenosis

  • Chronic lower back stiffness

Cox Technic is not traction. Traction tables pull the whole spine at once, usually with preset weights or motors, and if anything needs to be changed the machine has to be stopped and reset. With Cox Technic, I guide the treatment with my hands the entire time. I can feel how your spine responds in real time and adjust the angle, depth, and rhythm to focus right where it’s needed. That makes the treatment gentler, safer, and more precise, especially for older adults or those with sensitive conditions. Most patients describe it as a comfortable stretch rather than a forceful pull, and it’s often more effective at restoring motion, easing nerve pressure, and reducing pain. This chiropractic approach has five research-backed goals, and each is explained in simple terms below:

  1. Increases intervertebral disc space height: Cox Technic gently stretches the spine in a controlled way. This creates more space between the bones of your back, giving the disc (the cushions between your bones) room to breathe and reducing pressure.

  2. Lowers intradiscal pressure from -39 to -192 mm Hg: By slowly and carefully decompressing the spine, Cox Technic lowers the pressure inside a damaged disc. Imagine it like creating a light suction that helps draw fluid and nutrients back into the disc so it can heal.

  3. Increases foraminal area up to 28%: The nerves in your spine pass through small openings. When Cox Technic gently opens up those spaces, the nerves get more room - often easing pain, numbness, or tingling that travels down the arms or legs.

  4. Adjusts facet joints and restores physiological ranges of motion: Cox Technic doesn’t just target discs and nerves. It also helps the small joints in the back of the spine (facet joints) move normally again, which restores flexibility and reduces stiffness.

  5. Afferentation: Every time Cox Technic is performed, it sends positive signals from the spine up to the brain. This “recalibration” improves communication between the body and nervous system, often helping with posture, muscle control, and overall balance.

Out of all 291 conditions studied in the Global Burden of Disease 2010 Study, Lower back pain ranked highest in terms of disability.
